Historical Korean Pavilion Artists Showcase Their Work
This Year, Artist Gu Jeong-a Participates in the Korean Pavilion
A special exhibition commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Korea Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in Italy will be held from the 19th to September 8th at the Venetian Malta Knights' Monastery.
Jeon Byeong-geuk, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, attended the opening ceremony on the 18th to congratulate and encourage artists and officials. In his congratulatory speech, he said, "The Korea Pavilion has produced world-renowned Korean artists and internationally spread the value of Korean art," adding, "As Korea and Italy celebrate the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations, I hope the exchange and cooperation between the two countries will deepen."
The event, hosted by the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service, was graced by past Korean Pavilion participating artists including Kang Ik-jung, who received the Special Award at the 1997 Venice Biennale, art directors, Ambassador Lee Seong-ho to Italy, Consul General Kang Hyeong-sik in Milan, and Park Nam-hee, director of the Nam June Paik Art Center.
The theme of the special exhibition announcing a new beginning is "Every Island is a Mountain." Thirty-six artists (teams) with experience at the Korea Pavilion showcase the connection of time and space through art. A Ministry of Culture official explained, "We aim to highlight the footprints of Korean art entering the global stage by exhibiting works produced over 30 years, from those presented at the pavilion's opening in 1995 to recent works."
This year’s Venice Biennale will be held from the 20th to November 24th. During this period, artist Gu Jeong-a will participate in the Korea Pavilion operated by the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service. Under the theme "A Journey of Korean Fragrance," she creates poetic transformations by adding invisible elements to architectural spaces.
