Seoul Metro Leads 'Urban Rail ESG Management'... Launch of 2nd ESG Management Committee

Establishing ESG Management Strategies Reflecting Company Characteristics to Achieve Sustainable Management

Seoul Metro (President Baek Ho) launched the 2nd ESG Management Committee and held its first meeting on the 18th to achieve the ESG vision of "Safe and Comfortable Urban Rail with Citizens."

Since declaring the introduction of ESG management in 2022, the corporation has formed the ESG Management Committee to systematically promote ESG management.

The newly launched 2nd ESG Management Committee plans to further advance and solidify the ESG management strategies carried out so far.

In 2022, marking its 5th anniversary, the corporation established and proclaimed the "ESG Management Declaration" and organized the 1st ESG Management Committee. The 1st committee conducted materiality assessments for selecting key issues and reviewed the appropriateness of ESG management strategy consulting services.

The 2nd ESG Management Committee consists of six experts in the fields of E (Environment), S (Social), and G (Governance) from academia, civic groups, and other diverse sectors, who are appointed as members to review and advise on overall ESG management.

This year, the corporation plans to enhance the ESG management system by establishing a dedicated ESG organization, actively applying new ESG-related technologies and systems to its operations, and strengthening performance evaluations using ESG management indices, thereby promoting continuous and voluntary ESG management.

In particular, from an ESG perspective, the corporation has set four major promotion strategies (Eco-friendly Management, Safety & Customer Management, Talent & Co-prosperity Management, Ethics & Communication Management), 16 strategic tasks (such as indoor air quality improvement, increased customer convenience, regional co-prosperity development, and expanded stakeholder communication), and 32 implementation tasks, which will be focused on, promoted, and monitored.

As part of the ESG implementation tasks, aiming for a target of 34㎍/㎥?about 30% stricter than the underground station fine dust maintenance standard of 50㎍/㎥ under the Indoor Air Quality Management Act?the corporation manages indoor air quality by installing fine dust absorption mats in stations with high concentrations of fine dust.

Additionally, a multilingual simultaneous conversation system has been established at the top 11 stations visited by foreign tourists, and to facilitate mobility for transportation-vulnerable groups, 13 stations will have additional elevators (E/L) installed by the end of this year, ensuring 100% coverage of one route per station throughout all stations, practicing accompaniment with the vulnerable.

For transparent ESG management, the corporation plans to publish a sustainability management report based on global standard criteria?the first among urban rail organizations?securing a competitive edge with enhanced ESG disclosure standards and leading ESG management in the urban rail sector.

The corporation has raised company-wide understanding of ESG management through benchmarking excellent institutions and inviting external experts for capacity-building training, and will continue to develop organizational ESG capabilities through ongoing employee education and sharing of best practices from other institutions.
