Promotion of Lights-Out Event to Build Consensus on Greenhouse Gas Reduction
Hamyang-gun, Gyeongnam Province, has designated the week from the 22nd to the 28th as Climate Change Week to commemorate the 54th 'Earth Day' and will hold a lights-out event for 10 minutes from 8 PM on the 22nd to raise awareness about greenhouse gas reduction and promote energy-saving practices.
'Earth Day' is a global commemorative day that began on April 22 the following year after the 1969 oil spill accident off the coast of California, USA, to protect the Earth's environment.
Public institutions such as the county office, town and township offices, and business sites, as well as apartment complexes, are scheduled to participate in the lights-out event from 8 PM for 10 minutes on the 22nd. Not only public institutions but also individual homes, apartments, and commercial establishments can voluntarily join the lights-out event for 10 minutes.
Additionally, during Climate Change Week, the county plans to operate promotional booths and campaigns under the theme '#Our Carbon Neutral Lifestyle Practice, Actually Great!' to raise awareness of the need for everyday actions toward carbon neutrality.
Practicing a carbon-neutral lifestyle can be done in various ways beyond the lights-out event, including ▲using tumblers instead of disposable cups ▲unplugging home appliances ▲reducing shower time and doing laundry in batches ▲using shopping bags instead of plastic bags ▲walking, cycling, and using public transportation.
A county official said, “We hope that through this Climate Change Week campaign and the lights-out event, residents will actively participate in energy-saving practices and take a step closer to carbon neutrality.”
