Samsung Electronics Develops Industry's Fastest LPDDR5X to Meet AI Demand

Achieving Industry-Leading Operation Speed of 10.7Gbps

Samsung Electronics has introduced the industry's fastest operating speed 'Low Power Double Data Rate (LPDDR) 5X' DRAM to respond to the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI). Through mass production of new products in the second half of the year, the company plans to secure applications in various fields including not only mobile but also servers and automotive electronics.

Samsung Electronics announced on the 17th that it has succeeded in developing LPDDR5X DRAM supporting the industry's highest operating speed of 10.7 gigabits per second (Gbps).

LPDDR is a mobile DRAM focused on low power consumption to be used in mobile devices with limited battery capacity. As the AI market has become fully active and especially on-device AI, which runs AI inside devices, has emerged, the role of low-power, high-performance LPDDR has grown.

Samsung Electronics' LPDDR5X is the smallest chip among 12-nanometer class LPDDR DRAMs. Compared to the previous generation, performance has increased by 25% and capacity by more than 30%. It supports up to 32 gigabytes (GB) in a single mobile DRAM package.

Through 'power variable optimization technology' that adjusts power according to performance and speed, and 'low power operation range expansion technology,' power consumption has improved by about 25%. This product can extend battery life in mobile devices and reduce the energy used for data processing in servers, enabling total cost of ownership (TCO) reduction.

Samsung Electronics plans to begin mass production in the second half of the year after completing verification of the new LPDDR5X DRAM product through collaboration with application processor and mobile companies. The new product is expected to be applied not only in the mobile sector but also in AI PCs, AI accelerators, servers, and automotive electronics.

Byoung-chul Bae, Vice President and Head of Product Planning at Samsung Electronics Memory Business, said, "As demand for low-power, high-performance semiconductors increases, the applications of LPDDR DRAM will expand from mobile to servers and beyond. We will continue to innovate by providing optimized solutions for the on-device AI era through close cooperation with our customers."

The mobile DRAM market based on LPDDR is expected to grow in scale along with increasing demand. Market research firm Omdia forecasts that the market size will increase by 41.71%, from $18.56 billion this year to $26.31 billion in 2028.
