Creating a Clean Neighborhood... Mapo-gu Joins Residents Monthly for 'Cleaning' Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo District, attending the street cleaning event on the day of the major cleanup in Yonggang-dong, cleaning the streets.

Mapo-gu (District Mayor Park Gang-su) announced that the 16 neighborhood community centers will designate one day each month starting in April as a ‘Big Cleaning Day’ to clean the entire area and create a cleaner street environment.

The big cleaning at the 16 neighborhood community centers involves not only improving cleanliness but also fostering local pride and affection. About 1,000 local residents, including Mapo-gu employees, professional organizations, and merchant associations, participate together.

The neighborhood community center big cleaning started on April 15 in Daeheung-dong, Yeomni-dong, and Yonggang-dong; on the 17th in Seogyo-dong, Mangwon 1-dong, and Mangwon 2-dong; on the 19th in Gongdeok-dong, Ahyeon-dong, and Dohwa-dong; on the 23rd in Seongsan 2-dong and Sangam-dong; on the 26th in Sinsu-dong, Seogang-dong, and Hapjeong-dong; and on the last big cleaning day of April, the 30th, in Yeonnam-dong and Seongsan 1-dong.

Participants gather early in the morning at the neighborhood community centers and move together to pick up trash and remove dust from general roads, alleys, and areas with frequent illegal dumping.

In particular, vulnerable areas such as shopping districts, parks, and places with heavy foot traffic are cleaned intensively.

Choi Seung-cheol (pseudonym, 39), who participated in the Yeomni-dong Big Cleaning Day event, said, “Creating clean streets through cleaning feels refreshing, and I feel it is very meaningful to contribute as a member of society. I will also participate in next month’s Big Cleaning Day to help make our neighborhood a better place to live.”

In May, Big Cleaning Days will begin on the 8th in Gongdeok-dong, Ahyeon-dong, and Dohwa-dong, and will be held in all neighborhoods. The monthly big cleaning will continue thereafter.

Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “I sincerely thank all the residents who participate in the big cleaning for a cleaner Mapo. Mapo-gu will continue to carefully monitor and manage every part of the district 365 days a year to create a pleasant and clean environment.”
