Choi Nam-ho, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, emphasized the importance of nuclear power on the 17th, stating, "Nuclear power is not an option but a necessity to support future advanced industries such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI)."
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that Vice Minister Choi attended the 'Nuclear Power Forum' performance report meeting held at the Korea Press Center on the same day, where he reviewed the achievements of public communication activities on nuclear power and shared future plans.
The event was attended by about 80 people, including Vice Minister Choi, Song Ha-jung, chairman of the forum, committee members from each division, related organizations in the nuclear power sector, and experts from industry, academia, and research.
The Nuclear Power Forum was launched in June last year to increase public acceptance of nuclear power. Since then, it has carried out public communication activities on nuclear power through academic, educational, youth, cultural, and legal divisions.
An official from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy explained, "The Nuclear Power Forum is composed of various sectors of the public, including nuclear power major students, residents of nuclear power plant areas, and civil society organizations, meaning that the public takes the lead in improving awareness of nuclear power." He added, "During its first term last year, the forum produced various promotional achievements such as media contributions, seminars, cultural events, and educational activities."
Chairman Song emphasized the role of the forum, saying, "With the 11th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand and the enactment of the High-Level Radioactive Waste Special Act approaching, improving social perception of nuclear power is expected to become even more important."
Vice Minister Choi also stated in his congratulatory remarks, "Securing public acceptance through communication is paramount for the qualitative advancement of the nuclear power industry." He urged, "I hope the Nuclear Power Forum, which is starting its second term, will continue to take the lead in providing the public with accurate information about nuclear power."
