Evaluation of World Cultural Heritage, Tourism Resources, and Hosting of Large-scale Events
The 'League of Legends Champions Korea (hereinafter LCK) Summer Finals,' the largest domestic e-sports tournament, will be held in Gyeongju this September.
On the 15th, Gyeongju City announced that it was finally selected as the '2024 LCK Summer Finals Host City' through a public contest hosted and organized by LCK/Korea e-Sports Association.
Marking its 12th year this year, the LCK is an e-sports league. The LCK Summer Finals attracted over 30,000 spectators last year, and the number of domestic and international online live viewers reached approximately 4 million per day, showing significant fan interest.
The city was selected as a first-round candidate city in January and submitted a hosting proposal. After a second-round on-site evaluation in February, the hosting was confirmed. This will be the third time the event is held in a non-capital region, following Daejeon last year.
The LCK Summer Finals are held twice annually, during the Spring and Summer seasons. The Spring Finals were held in Seoul last April, and the Summer Finals will take place at the Gyeongju Indoor Gymnasium over two days, from September 7 to 8.
Before the event, the city plans to establish a close cooperation system with related organizations in areas such as safety and traffic order to ensure the most successful tournament in history.
With the hosting of this tournament, the city expects not only to expand the base of e-sports and build a related industrial foundation but also to greatly contribute to revitalizing the local economy through the influx of about 30,000 tourists, including the MZ generation.
Joo Nak-young, Mayor of Gyeongju, said, “Gyeongju is a historic and cultural tourist city with abundant infrastructure around the venue, including accommodation, transportation, and tourism,” adding, “We will thoroughly prepare for the event to continue the reputation of the LCK through a successful tournament.”
