On the 16th, the Anyang Dongan Police Station in Gyeonggi Province reported this news. Earlier, on February 9th at around 10:15 p.m., A, who was working part-time at a convenience store in Dongan-gu, Anyang City, received a request for help from a student passing by the store. The student said, "A middle-aged man who appears to be a taxi driver is being assaulted by a young drunken man across the street," and asked to "call someone for help."
Upon hearing this, A immediately went outside and saw the men entangled on the opposite sidewalk. He called 112 (emergency number). Then, he pulled the arm of the drunken man who was choking the middle-aged man and restrained him from behind. The drunken man's attitude gradually softened during the continued struggle. Nevertheless, A held him firmly until the police arrived and took him into custody.
The arrested drunken man was identified as B, a man in his 30s. At the time, he tried to flee without paying the taxi fare of 12,000 won. When taxi driver C (66) tried to stop him, B knocked C down and assaulted him using jiu-jitsu techniques, including choking. C was confirmed to have sustained injuries requiring 12 weeks of medical treatment, including fractures. The police charged B with serious injury and sent the case to the prosecution on the 27th of last month.
On the 15th of this month, the Anyang Dongan Police Station presented A with a letter of appreciation and a monetary reward for helping apprehend the suspect. Chief Jang Hyun-deok of the Anyang Dongan Police Station said, "Although it could have been easily overlooked, A actively reported the incident and restrained the suspect, preventing greater harm. We will focus more on community policing activities with local residents to maintain peaceful daily life." A stated, "I only thought I had to stop B because C seemed seriously injured. I believe anyone would have done the same if I hadn’t been there. I think I just did what was right."
The police plan to highlight cases where citizens or organizations have contributed to arresting suspects, preventing crimes, or saving lives, as well as instances where the police have actively served as safety models in the field. Those who assist will be rewarded, and through SNS events and other means, the police aim to encourage many citizens to take an interest and participate in maintaining community safety.
