Recognized for Book Reading Cultural Space Project
Ulju-gun announced on the 16th that it received the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award in the field of small library operation activation at the ‘2024 Library Promotion and Development Merit’ event.
Ulju-gun was recognized for its efforts in actively discovering and developing small library projects at the local government level to create a life-friendly reading culture environment.
Since establishing the ‘Comprehensive Plan for Creating Small Libraries as Book Reading Cultural Spaces’ in 2008, Ulju-gun has continuously secured related infrastructure and currently operates 56 locations.
In addition, it participated in job contest projects such as jobs for middle-aged people and itinerant librarian support projects for five years, placing professionals there to improve library accessibility and secure expert personnel.
Last year, to respond to changing times and increase space utilization, Ulju-gun promoted a facility improvement project to create two small libraries as open reading cultural spaces.
Lee Soon-geol, the mayor of Ulju-gun, said, “We were able to achieve excellent results through long-term efforts to revitalize small libraries,” and added, “We will work even harder to promote the local community’s reading culture and the development of library operations.”
