The Gyeonggi-do Special Judicial Police Unit conducted inspections on 360 school meal supply companies from the 11th to the 29th of last month in preparation for the new school term, uncovering 28 companies (29 cases) that violated related laws, including storing starch syrup that was 22 months past its expiration date.
Among the major violations, Company A in Suwon City was caught storing a total of five types of products, including starch syrup that was 22 months past its expiration date, without labeling them as 'for disposal' or 'for educational use.' Company B in Hanam City was found to have stored refrigerated products, such as tteokbokki ingredients popular among students, at room temperature.
Company C in Gwangju City was caught manufacturing and storing 4kg-sized minced garlic without registering as a food manufacturing and processing business.
Company D in Seongnam City was found not to have conducted self-quality inspections at least once a month while producing ground and packaged Korean beef round cuts.
Gyeonggi-do plans to review the legality of the violations through supplementary investigations of the identified companies and refer the cases to the prosecution.
Hong Eun-gi, head of the Gyeonggi-do Special Judicial Police Unit, stated, "The discovery of illegal cases in school meal supply companies responsible for students' health is a serious issue," adding, "We will strengthen crackdowns on unsanitary companies to ensure the safety of students' food."
