Seunghui Lee, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, Joins 'Bye Bye Plastic Challenge'

Lee Soon-hee, Mayor of Gangbuk District Office in Seoul, participated in the plastic reduction campaign "Bye Bye Plastic" hosted by the Ministry of Environment on the 15th.

The "Bye Bye Plastic" challenge is a nationwide campaign meaning "saying goodbye to plastic." Participants promise to reduce unnecessary plastic use, post their commitment on social media, and then nominate others to join the campaign.

Gangbuk District has installed unmanned return machines for reusable cups within the district office, encouraging employees to use reusable cups and tumblers instead of disposable plastic or paper cups.

Additionally, to reduce carbon emissions, the district recycles old banners into shopping bags distributed to residents and has installed umbrella water removers in public institutions, leading efforts to reduce disposable plastic bags.

Along with this, the district actively promotes proper plastic waste separation methods to residents through newsletters, SNS, and videos. Promotional materials are also distributed in four languages and Braille to ensure easy understanding for multicultural families, foreigners, and visually impaired individuals.

Lee Soon-hee, Mayor of Gangbuk District, participated in this challenge after being nominated by Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon District, and nominated Lee Soo-hee, Mayor of Gangdong District, and Kim Mi-kyung, Mayor of Eunpyeong District, as the next participants.

Mayor Lee Soon-hee said, "I am pleased to participate in the Bye Bye Plastic challenge to reduce indiscriminate plastic use," adding, "I will strive not only for personal practice but also to create a work environment where all Gangbuk District Office employees can reduce plastic use."
