A Celebration of Diversity and Inclusion... Yeongdeungpo-gu Hosts the 44th Disability Day Commemoration Event

Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it will hold various events throughout April in collaboration with organizations and groups for people with disabilities to commemorate the ‘44th Disability Day’.

First, on April 16, the ‘44th Disability Day Commemoration Event’ will be held at the Yeongdeungpo Art Hall. Hosted by the ‘Yeongdeungpo-gu Disabled Love Sharing House,’ about 500 participants including people with disabilities, their families, and disability welfare organizations and groups will gather to communicate and share time together.

Additionally, the event will feature various cultural performances such as ▲reading of the Disability Human Rights Charter ▲harmonica performances, as well as ▲promotion of disability organizations and groups and exhibitions of their works. In particular, on this day, 20 individuals who have contributed to the promotion of welfare and support for the independence of people with disabilities (10 recipients of the District Mayor’s Award and 10 recipients of the District Council Chairperson’s Award) will be awarded certificates of commendation in celebration of Disability Day.

On April 19, various events and campaigns are planned. First, the Disability Family Support Center and the Lifelong Education Center for People with Developmental Disabilities will conduct campaigns to raise awareness about disabilities. They will hold an O·X quiz event with trainees to enhance understanding of disabilities and exhibit works created by people with developmental disabilities.

At Mullae Neighborhood Park, an exhibition of paintings directly drawn by people with developmental disabilities will be held under the theme ‘There is a Family with a Disabled Member Living in Our Neighborhood,’ providing an opportunity for local residents to appreciate the artworks and communicate together.

Also, under the supervision of the Yeongdeungpo Municipal Disabled Welfare Center, an outing event for adults with developmental disabilities will be held in collaboration with Korail Distribution. Twenty-five people with developmental disabilities and their guardians will go on an outing to Wolmido in Incheon, enjoying the local culture and leisure, and savoring relaxation and rest.

The Yeongdeungpo Municipal Disabled Welfare Center has designated April as the ‘April Movements, Month of Practical Actions’ and plans to carry out various programs including disability human rights education, human rights campaigns, and contests until April 30.

Furthermore, the district plans to produce a booklet containing all welfare projects necessary for people with disabilities and distribute it to people with disabilities and their families, local community centers, and disability welfare organizations and groups.

In particular, the booklet will introduce the ‘Voice Eye Code’ for the visually impaired, providing voice support as well.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “I sincerely congratulate the 44th Disability Day commemoration event and deeply thank the people with disabilities, their families, and related personnel who have worked hard to promote disability welfare. As important as policies, I will do my best to create a mature society where everyone can be happy without distinction between people with and without disabilities, through a perspective free of prejudice.”
