Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong Steps Down After 20 Years... Transfers Power to Deputy Prime Minister

Singapore's head of government, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong (photo), will step down next month.


According to major foreign media on the 15th, Prime Minister Lee announced on the same day that he will hand over power to his successor, Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, on the 15th of next month.


In a statement on the day, Prime Minister Lee said, "I will resign from the position of Prime Minister on May 15, and Deputy Prime Minister Wong will be sworn in as the next Prime Minister on the same day."

Lee, the eldest son of Lee Kuan Yew, the first Prime Minister (1965?1990), has been in power for about 20 years since taking office as the third Prime Minister in 2004, following former Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong.


Last November, he stated that he would hand over power to Deputy Prime Minister Wong within a year at the earliest.


Deputy Prime Minister Wong, a member of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) that has been in power for a long time in Singapore, was chosen as the successor in April 2022.
