Gwangyang City Successfully Concludes Seomjingang Flower Road Marathon Event

Over 6,000 Participants at Gwangyang Sinwon Riverside Area

Gwangyang City, Jeollanam-do announced on the 14th that the 13th MBC Seomjingang Flower Road Marathon, hosted and organized by Yeosu MBC, MBC Gyeongnam, Gwangyang City Sports Council, and Hadong County Sports Council, was successfully held at the Shinwon Riverside Parking Lot area.


Now in its 13th year, the 'Seomjingang Flower Road Marathon' began in 2009 with the purpose of fostering harmony and friendship between Yeongnam and Honam regions and promoting health.

The event is held alternately each year in Gwangyang City, Jeollanam-do and Hadong County, Gyeongsangnam-do, and this year, after five years due to COVID-19, it was held in Gwangyang where participants could enjoy the scenic views of the Seomjingang riverside.


About 6,000 participants took part in this year’s event, showing great enthusiasm. The marathon was divided into four courses: full marathon, half marathon, 10km, and 5km.


The full marathon started at 9 a.m. from the Shinwon Riverside Parking Lot in Gwangyang and continued to near Namdo Bridge (Uncheon-ri, Gurye-gun). In the full marathon, with about 260 participants, Mr. Kim Jeong-yeol (2 hours 46 minutes 23 seconds, Pohang City) and Ms. Moon Seon-mi (3 hours 17 minutes 59 seconds, Uiwang City) took first place in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively.


In the half marathon, Mr. Jin Bo-seong (1 hour 17 minutes 22 seconds, Busan Metropolitan City) and Ms. Lee Seon-hwa (1 hour 27 minutes 1 second, Busan Metropolitan City) won first place in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively. In the 10km race, Mr. Kim Seung-gwan (36 minutes, Gwangyang City) and Ms. Jeong Soon-ja (41 minutes 7 seconds, Jinju City) took first place in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively.


Jung In-hwa, mayor of Gwangyang City, said, “I am pleased that the event, which was paused due to COVID-19, could be held again in Gwangyang with the enthusiasm of many participants.” He added, “We will continue to strive to ensure that this event, which allows people to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Seomjingang River and fosters harmony and friendship between Yeongnam and Honam, can continue.”
