"Don't Fall for Jeonse Fraud"... Incheon Teaching It at Schools Starting from Elementary Students

Activation of Real Estate Education in Elementary, Middle, and High Schools in Incheon City

As jeonse fraud emerges as a social issue, Incheon City is starting education to prevent jeonse fraud damage in elementary, middle, and high schools.

The Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 14th that it will promote a comprehensive plan to revitalize real estate education starting this year.

First, real estate education materials linked to curriculum classes or extracurricular creative experiential activities will be developed and distributed to frontline schools. Elementary schools will be provided with metaverse-centered education that allows virtual experience of real estate contracts and more. In middle and high schools, education related to real estate concepts and knowledge useful in real life will be conducted.

In particular, after the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), jeonse fraud prevention education will be provided to 12th-grade students through visiting programs. The goal is to support basic real estate education tailored to their first independence as they enter university or start working. They will be educated on ▲how to distinguish risky listings or malicious landlords ▲precautions when trading listings online ▲procedures for confirming mortgage rights ▲how to write jeonse and monthly rent contracts, among others.

The Office of Education plans to designate and operate a total of six schools, two each from elementary, middle, and high schools, as real estate education practice schools starting next year after conducting a demand survey this year. This measure is in response to repeated cases of young adults entering society independently without real estate education falling victim to jeonse fraud.

According to Incheon City, a survey on the actual condition of jeonse fraud revealed that a total of 2,969 households were affected in the first half of last year.

An official from the Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education said, "Existing real estate education mostly consisted of investment-related content, so practical education to prevent criminal damage such as jeonse fraud was necessary," adding, "We will strive to establish real estate education in frontline schools."
