LG OLED TV Continues to Receive Environmental Certifications from Overseas Organizations

Certified for 4 Consecutive Years by Carbon Trust and SGS
16,000 Tons Reduction of Plastics Used in TV Manufacturing
Approximately 80,000 Tons Reduction in Carbon Emissions

LG Electronics announced on the 14th that its LG OLED TV has received environmental product certifications for four consecutive years from the UK-based non-profit certification body Carbon Trust and Swiss SGS. It also received certification from Intertek in the UK for two consecutive years.

Carbon Trust evaluates the environmental impact throughout the entire process from product manufacturing, distribution, use, to disposal. SGS mainly inspects resource efficiency and the use of hazardous substances, while Intertek grants certification by measuring the proportion of recycled materials used.

LG OLED TVs received high marks in environmental certification assessments by applying a large amount of lightweight composite fiber materials and having fewer components compared to liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs, which require backlights. LG Electronics’ 65-inch OLED Evo uses 60% less plastic and is 20% lighter than an LCD TV of the same size.

LG Electronics expects that the amount of plastic used in manufacturing OLED TVs this year will be reduced by about 16,000 tons compared to producing the same quantity of LCD TVs. With the reduction in plastic usage, carbon emissions from production and transportation processes are also expected to decrease by approximately 80,000 tons. This amount exceeds the carbon dioxide absorption of a 30-year-old pine forest covering an area equivalent to 10,000 soccer fields over one year.

Furthermore, LG Electronics stated that about 20% of the plastic used in manufacturing all TVs, including OLED TVs, is recycled plastic. Previously, LG Electronics was included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) World index for 12 consecutive years, which selects the top 10% of companies in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management, according to the DJSI evaluation announced at the end of last year. It also received a comprehensive A grade for three consecutive years in the '2023 ESG Evaluation and Rating Announcement' by the Korea ESG Standards Institute and an A grade for four consecutive years in the ESG evaluation by the global ESG rating agency MSCI.

Baek Seonpil, Head of HE Product Planning at LG Electronics, said, "LG OLED TV is the best premium TV leading the market not only in viewing experience but also in ESG fields," adding, "We will continue our efforts to protect the environment for a better life for everyone."
