The Actual Possibility of Testimony Remains Uncertain
Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will testify in the criminal trial next week concerning the hush money allegations related to a sexual misconduct scandal.
On the 12th (local time), according to the American daily newspaper The New York Times (NYT) and CNN, Trump responded to reporters' questions about whether he would take the witness stand during a press conference held with Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, saying, "Yes. I will testify."
However, the NYT predicted that it is uncertain whether Trump will actually testify.
The NYT reported that Trump is likely to wait to see if the prosecution presents strong arguments and whether the court will limit the prosecution's cross-examination against him.
Trump has previously said he would testify in trials but canceled on the day of testimony.
Trump was indicted in March last year on charges of paying hush money through his personal lawyer Michael Cohen to prevent the disclosure of a past sexual encounter with adult film actress Stormy Daniels just before the 2016 presidential election, and for falsifying company records related to those payments.
Trump denies the charges and maintains his innocence.
