Megastudy Education announced on the 12th that Nam resigned from his position as an outside director due to personal reasons. Nam, who served as the first head of the National Police Agency's Criminal Investigation Headquarters and retired last year, was appointed as an outside director at Megastudy Education's shareholders' meeting on the 28th of last month. His term was set to begin on the 4th of this month and last for three years.
However, once news of Nam's appointment as an outside director at Megastudy became public, some criticized it as inappropriate.
This was because the police investigation and tax authorities' inquiry were ongoing regarding the so-called private education cartel case, in which Megastudy instructors purchased mock exam questions from teachers who had experience as College Scholastic Ability Test question setters, raising concerns about the fairness of the investigation.
In fact, both within the academy industry and the police, there was speculation that Nam's appointment as an outside director?despite his lack of experience in education or business management?was a strategic move by Megastudy considering the ongoing investigations.
Megastudy stated, "The outside director was appointed through proper procedures, including the shareholders' meeting on the 28th of last month and employment approval by the Government Ethics Committee on the 29th," but added, "We received a statement from Director Nam today expressing his decision to resign in order to dispel unnecessary misunderstandings and suspicions and to avoid placing a burden on the police organization he was part of."
