Kim Seonghoe Elected Representative Leaves a Thank You Comment Personally

"Please stop leaving congratulatory comments on my election"

Kim Seonghoe, the Democratic Party candidate who ran for the 22nd general election in Goyang Gap, Gyeonggi Province and was elected, posted a video clarifying that he is not the look-alike YouTuber with the same name.

On the 11th, a video titled "Please stop leaving comments. This is the 300th time I’m saying this" was uploaded on the YouTube channel 'Kim Seonghoe’s G Encyclopedia.' Kim Seonghoe (46), who runs the channel, is a gaming YouTuber and shares the same name as the elected Kim.

Kim said, "Democratic Party supporters, especially voters in Goyang Gap, I know you’re happy about the victory, but I am not that person," adding, "On the day of the election, the video was uploaded and the number of comments saying 'Congratulations on your election, Kim Seonghoe' reached hundreds, so I thought I had to post this video now." He continued, "I am Kim Seonghoe, but I am not that Kim Seonghoe," and added, "You say our faces look exactly the same? We also find that amazing, but anyway, I am not him."

The YouTuber Kim and the elected Kim are known to resemble each other not only in name but also in appearance. Coincidentally, both are 25th-generation descendants of the Andong Kim clan, Ikwon Gongpa branch. Kim explained, "We are relatives but different people," and said, "I am called 'Game Seonghoe,' and the Democratic Party member is called 'Left Seonghoe' or 'Min Seonghoe.' There is also a 'Woo Seonghoe' Kim who was a lawmaker from the Grand National Party. The name Seonghoe is quite common."

This look-alike incident between Kim and the elected Kim is not the first time. Four years ago, Kim clarified their relationship. When the elected Kim ran as an Open Democratic Party proportional representative candidate in the 21st general election, Kim’s YouTube channel received comments like "Is the broadcaster Kim Seonghoe the older brother of the Democratic Party proportional representative candidate?" and "You said you would never go into politics, but a few days later, there’s an article about running as a proportional representative." At that time, the elected Kim was introduced as a broadcaster running a political YouTube channel, which caused more confusion between the two.

After becoming a hot topic for their resemblance, the two met in person on a YouTube broadcast last December. In the video, when Kim asked, "How do we look exactly the same?" the elected Kim replied, "I was also surprised. Since there is an age difference, I was once surprised looking at Kim’s photos from his 20s."

Among netizens, identifying Kim and the elected Kim as the same person is regarded as a kind of ‘meme’ (trending content). Despite Kim’s clarification, comments such as "Congratulations on entering the National Assembly, Kim Seonghoe," and "We support Representative Kim Seonghoe’s presidential run" have been posted on the video, with many finding the situation amusing, saying "I thought they were doppelgangers."

In particular, the elected Kim himself left a comment on the video, saying, "I sincerely thank the citizens of Goyang Gap who have given me unwavering support," which has drawn even more attention.

The elected Kim ran in the 22nd general election in Goyang Gap, Gyeonggi Province, defeating Han Changseop of the People Power Party and Sim Sangjeong of the Green Party. He is a former vice president of the student council at Korea University and has served as an aide to former Democratic Party lawmakers Shin Gyerun, Son Hyewon, and Jeong Cheongrae.
