79 Election Offense Cases Detected in Chungnam for General Election... Most Cases Involve Spreading False Information

In relation to the 22nd National Assembly election, 79 election offenders were caught in the Chungnam region.

The Chungnam Provincial Police Agency announced on the 11th that they cracked down on 79 individuals in 62 cases during this general election period. Among them, 2 were sent to the prosecution, 11 were not prosecuted, and 66 are under investigation.

By type of crime, spreading false information was the most common with 31 people, followed by damage to banners and posters with 13 people, and bribery with 9 people.

The number of suspects under investigation increased by 55 compared to the 21st National Assembly election. The police believe that the increase in the number of crackdowns is due to the limitation of the scope of investigation by prosecutors following amendments to the Prosecutors' Office Act and other laws.

Considering that the statute of limitations for election crimes is short at six months, the police plan to operate a focused investigation period of four months to concentrate investigative efforts.

A police official said, "We will strictly investigate election offenders to ensure they receive punishment commensurate with their crimes regardless of whether they are elected or not," and added, "We will also crack down on acts involving money or goods under the pretexts of congratulations, consolation, or return favors."
