'ChatGPT Father' Altman Pushes for Global AI Alliance

Meeting with UAE Investors and Government to Discuss Large-Scale Infrastructure
Beyond AI Semiconductor Production to Energy and Data Centers

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is reportedly pushing for the formation of a global alliance to expand infrastructure such as semiconductors, energy, and data centers necessary for AI development, Bloomberg reported on the 10th (local time).

Sources revealed that CEO Altman visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE) this week to meet with investors and government officials. It is known that CEO Altman discussed ways for private companies to operate expensive large-scale AI infrastructure in cooperation with multiple countries. Additionally, CEO Altman has been in contact with officials from several Western countries and plans to hold meetings in Washington later this week.

Bloomberg stated, "It is still unclear in what form these efforts will materialize."

OpenAI cites the massive energy required to power AI systems as one of the biggest challenges facing the AI industry. With AI power consumption surging, CEO Altman has said a breakthrough is needed. Power generation methods such as nuclear fusion or solar power that can solve energy shortages could accelerate AI development. Previously, foreign media reported that CEO Altman is attracting investments from global investors while pushing to build an in-house production network to reduce dependence on Nvidia in the AI semiconductor sector.

Bloomberg evaluated, "This meeting shows CEO Altman’s efforts to address concerns that semiconductor and other key infrastructure supplies will not keep pace with AI development speed," adding, "CEO Altman’s cooperation with officials from various countries around the world can be seen as a broader activity than previously known."

According to sources, current discussions include not only semiconductor production but also other resources such as energy and data centers. The plan is to form a broad AI alliance beyond establishing an AI semiconductor venture.

OpenAI stated, "As previously reported, OpenAI is continuously discussing the expansion of global infrastructure and supply chains for semiconductors, energy, and data centers."

Bloomberg cited sources saying that CEO Altman met Martina Strong, the U.S. Ambassador to the UAE, this week in the UAE. CEO Altman is scheduled to go to Washington on the 11th to hold meetings with Congress and national security and intelligence agency officials. CEO Altman has previously exchanged views with the U.S. Congress on plans to establish semiconductor manufacturing plants.
