Yangcheon-gu (District Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced plans to create various forms of ‘Attractive Gardens’ in 25 key locations by the end of the year, allowing people to encounter charming gardens anywhere in their daily lives. On May 12, the district will hold the ‘Donghaeng Garden Festival’ to promote a garden culture that everyone can enjoy together.
This year, the district will establish a total of 25 Attractive Gardens for the first time, including representative sites such as the ‘Orange Garden’ at Haenuri Square, ‘Hello! Yangcheon Garden’ at Omok Waterfront Park and the Ogeumgyo Intersection traffic island, the ‘Healing Attractive Garden’ along Anyangcheon Stream, and the ‘Sinjeongsan Toddler Forest Donghaeng Garden’ at the Sinjeongsan Toddler Forest Experience Center.
First, at Haenuri Square, which crosses the Mokdong central axis, the ‘Orange Garden’ will be created, incorporating the district’s representative color, orange, symbolizing burning hope. Brightly colored orange benches, designed distinctively, will be placed throughout the square, surrounded by seasonal flowering plants to add freshness.
At Omok Waterfront Park and the Ogeumgyo Intersection traffic island (zones 1 to 3), the first green space encountered upon entering Yangcheon-gu, the ‘Hello! Yangcheon Garden’ will be established with the theme of ‘First Greetings’ with Yangcheon-gu. Considering the heavy traffic along the roadside, wind- and pollution-resistant tree species will be planted, especially low-height plants at drivers’ eye level to ensure visibility and prevent accidents, while providing a bright landscape.
Along the semi-circular riverside walking paths between Mokdonggyo and Huimanggyo bridges on Anyangcheon Stream, five ‘Healing Attractive Gardens’ will be planted with irises, lilies, and other flowers to offer a variety of colors.
Additionally, the ‘Sinjeongsan Toddler Forest Donghaeng Garden’ will be prepared at the Sinjeongsan Ureongbawi Toddler Forest Experience Center, a popular natural experience spot for children. A 100㎡ ‘Five Senses Flower Bed’ to aid sensory development during growth and a 500㎡ ‘Stump Play Garden’ linked to active experience programs are scheduled to be completed this month.
Furthermore, Attractive Gardens reflecting the characteristics of each space will be created by the second half of the year at Sumyeongsan Dullegil Trail, Onsu Park Yeonui District, and Anyangcheon Stream Ecological Park. Garden artists with award-winning experience at prestigious garden expos and ‘Garden Friends,’ specialized volunteer park resources in Yangcheon-gu, will contribute their expertise to the creation of these Attractive Gardens.
In particular, the district has embedded the value of ‘Donghaeng’ (togetherness) in this Attractive Garden project. Children from daycare centers will participate in planting at Haenuri Square’s ‘Orange Garden’ and the ‘Sinjeongsan Toddler Forest Donghaeng Garden,’ while ‘Garden Friends’ will join in the creation of ‘Hello! Yangcheon Garden.’ Additionally, ‘Garden Friends’ will operate ‘Visiting Donghaeng Gardening’ at locations such as Seonam Hospital, Sinwol Youth Culture Center, and Yangcheon Youth Job Cafe, supporting residents to enjoy the charm of gardens and find healing close to their daily lives.
Alongside this, a ‘Participatory Donghaeng Gardening’ program will be run, allowing residents to directly experience gardening activities. First, the program ‘Interesting Garden Stories Told by Garden Experts’ will open with a total of four sessions, two each in the first and second halves of the year. Inviting current garden experts such as tree doctors and garden book authors, the lectures will focus on garden humanities, covering topics from village gardens to garden management and community culture.
For residents wishing to learn gardening, a ‘One-Day Gardening’ program using five locations including Haenuri Garden will be operated from this month through October. Interested residents can participate in seasonal garden management experiences such as pruning, watering, and weeding alongside ‘Garden Friends.’ The program will be held 2 to 4 times monthly, and those wishing to enroll can apply through the district office’s integrated reservation portal on the website.
On May 12, the ‘Donghaeng Garden Festival’ to promote a garden culture for all to enjoy will be held at Omok Park. The festival will feature gardening experience booths, busking performances, garden expos, photo zones, and various events, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the charm of urban gardens. Notably, the eco-friendly ‘Marche Farmers Market’ will also take place at the same location, offering a rich variety of sights presented by farmers, chefs, and handicraft artists all in one place.
Lee Gi-jae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, stated, “We will carefully carry out this project so that ‘Attractive Gardens’ harmoniously blending nature and the city can be found everywhere around us.” He added, “We will continue to make every effort to ensure Yangcheon-gu becomes a place where nature-friendly living spaces and sustainable urban development possibilities can flourish.”
