[22nd General Election] Gwangju Gwangsan-gap Park Gyuntaek Elected "Will Repay with Prosecution Reform"

Park Gyuntaek, the Democratic Party candidate for Gwangsan-gu (Gap), Gwangju Metropolitan City, has secured his entry into the 22nd National Assembly.

According to the Central Election Commission on the 11th, as of 12:50 a.m., Park Gyuntaek of the Democratic Party won the election with 81.55% of the vote.

Following him, Kim Jeonghyun of the People Power Party received 7.21%, Jeong Heeseong of the Progressive Party 6.19%, Jeong Hyeongho of the New Future Party 3.55%, and Yang Yunyeol, an independent candidate, 1.48% of the vote.

Park, a former prosecutor, was born in 1966 in Gwangsan, Jeollanam-do. He attended Songjeong Middle School and Gwangju Daedong High School before graduating from Seoul National University with a degree in law. He passed the 31st Judicial Examination and completed the 21st Judicial Research and Training Institute in 1992. After serving as an Army legal officer, he was appointed as a prosecutor at the Northern Branch of the Seoul District Prosecutors' Office in 1995.

In 2017, he was appointed Director of the Prosecutor's Office, attracting attention as the first person from Honam in 11 years to hold the position.

The following year, in 2018, he gained further recognition by becoming the only high-ranking prosecutor from the 21st Judicial Research and Training Institute to be appointed Chief Prosecutor of the Gwangju High Prosecutors' Office. He served as the head of the Judicial Research and Training Institute in 2019 and retired in January 2020. Afterward, he joined the Democratic Party in 2022, serving as Vice Chairman of the Political Retaliation Investigation Countermeasures Committee, and in October of the same year, he established the law firm ‘Gwangsan,’ continuing his career as a lawyer.

In September 2023, he rose to prominence as ‘Lee Jae-myung’s lawyer’ by securing the dismissal of the arrest warrant review for Lee Jae-myung, the party leader.

Park Gyuntaek said, “I will deeply cherish the great will of the people of Gwangsan-gu who chose me, a political newcomer, as the vanguard for regaining power,” adding, “Today’s victory of Park Gyuntaek is a victory created by the wishes of the people of Gwangsan-gu who long for regime change and the development of Gwangsan.”

He continued, “I will definitely keep and fulfill the promises I made to the residents during the primary and election campaign,” emphasizing, “To judge the Yoon Seok-yeol administration, I will reform the prosecution without fail, remove the obstacles blocking Gwangsan’s development, and sow the seeds for Gwangsan’s future in their place.”

He added, “If I neglect today’s pledge and promise, please sternly admonish me. Please be a strong support so that I can carry out confident legislative activities backed by the full support of the people of Gwangsan-gu,” and concluded, “I will be the most humble in Gwangsan and the most powerful in the National Assembly. I will become a politician that the people of Gwangsan can be proud of.”
