'Dear Evan Hansen' and 'Oktapbang Goyangi' Popular
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on the 11th that the issuance rate of the 'Youth Culture and Arts Pass,' introduced this year, exceeded 50% within 12 days of its launch.
This project supports approximately 160,000 19-year-old youths nationwide with up to 150,000 KRW per person regardless of income to encourage attendance at performances and exhibitions. Applications for issuance began on the 28th of last month.
According to the Ministry, as of the 8th, 80,880 individuals born in 2005 have received the pass, accounting for 51% of the 160,000 eligible recipients. By region, issuance rates were highest in Seoul (68.4%), Sejong (63.3%), Incheon (58%), Gyeonggi (53.3%), and Jeonnam (48.9%), in that order.
The performances and exhibitions that attracted the most interest from users during the first week of this month were 'Dear Evan Hansen,' 'Oktapbang Goyangi,' and 'Utopia: Nowhere, Now Here.' 'Dear Evan Hansen' is a musical that won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. 'Oktapbang Goyangi' is a play based on the novel of the same name and has been highly popular, with a cumulative audience of 2.6 million since 2010. 'Utopia: Nowhere, Now Here' is a digital art exhibition depicting utopia, created collaboratively by author Kim Cho-yeop, who wrote the novel "If We Cannot Travel at the Speed of Light," and seven surrealist artists from Korea and abroad.
Local governments and public cultural and artistic institutions offer various discount services to attract attention. Performances and exhibitions providing benefits include Daegu Opera House's 'Faust' by the Daegu Cultural Arts Promotion Agency, 'The Cellisten Ensemble 14th Regular Concert' at Yeongdo Cultural Arts Center, 'Sunwoo Yekwon with Orchestre de Chambre de Paris' by Chuncheon Cultural Foundation, '2024 Pyeongchang Daegwallyeong Music Festival' by Gangwon Cultural Foundation, 'Musical Brahms' at Incheon Jung-gu Cultural Center, and 'Paris Tree Cross Boys Choir' at Sejong Arts Center.
