Changwon Special City Initiates Glocalization with Selection for Changwon K-POP World Festival Contest

Selected for the Ministry of Culture's K-Culture Overseas Promotion Project
Secured 100 Million KRW in National Funding

Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam has been finally selected for the ‘Local Government Cooperation, K-Culture Overseas Promotion Project’ and secured 100 million KRW in national funding.

This project, conducted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism targeting metropolitan and local governments nationwide, supports global promotion of K-Culture programs that invite foreigners selected through overseas preliminaries and competitions.


The city plans to use the secured 100 million KRW in national funding to produce promotional content aimed at enhancing festival awareness and city branding, as well as to provide Korean cultural experiences for overseas participants, thereby expanding the base of K-Culture.


Based on this selection, the city also revealed future operational plans to elevate the event into a global festival attracting people worldwide. According to city officials, the core of the operational direction is to expand the influx of foreign tourists linked to the event.


To this end, the city intends to actively engage in strategic overseas marketing in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and plans to reorganize the current competitive format of the contest into a harmony-centered performance style to create a genuine K-POP festival. Additionally, by integrating cultural and tourism resources of the city with those of other regions into tourism products, the event aims to transform from a one-time event into a stay-type festival.


Jo Myung-rae, the 2nd Vice Mayor, said, “We are honored to establish a glocalization foundation for the Changwon K-POP World Festival through this project selection,” and added, “Going forward, the Changwon K-POP World Festival will play a central role in attracting overseas tourism resources to Korea through continuous change and innovation, leading the globalization of K-Culture.”


Meanwhile, the Changwon K-POP World Festival is a program featuring K-POP cover dance performances by overseas participants who passed global auditions held at overseas diplomatic missions, alongside performances by domestic K-POP singers. Since its first event in 2011, it has maintained its reputation as one of Changwon’s top three representative festivals for 13 years.
