Guro-gu Operates Health and Medical Career Experience Program for High School Students

Guro-gu (District Mayor Moon Heon-il) is operating a career experience program in the health and medical field called the ‘Career Compass Program’ for high school 1st and 2nd grade students.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the number of students interested in the health and medical field or aspiring to related careers has increased, and the roles of epidemiologists and infectious disease management workers have become more important due to the emergence of various new infectious diseases.

Guro-gu has established a collaborative system with the Guro-gu Public Health Center, Guro Career and Job Experience Support Center, and the High School Career Teachers Association, and planned a career experience program to help set career directions in the health and medical field by linking with local hospitals, pharmaceutical sectors, fire stations, and public health centers.

This program will run from this month until January next year for 60 students in grades 1 and 2 from four schools?Gyeongin High School, Wooshin High School, Gocheok High School, and Oryu High School?who applied in advance.

The program is operated in four sessions with 15 students per session, and consists of ▲orientation and one-on-one counseling ▲role-playing experiences of health and medical occupations ▲field visits by occupation ▲psychological education and a completion ceremony.

The biggest advantage is that students can visit actual workplaces such as hospitals, pharmacies, and public health centers to experience the work firsthand and enhance their practical understanding of the jobs through one-on-one counseling with current professionals.

In addition, the district provides psychological education linked with the Guro-gu Mental Health Welfare Center to help participants manage stress on their own at home or school.

Students who participate in all four sessions will be issued a certificate of completion for the Infectious Disease Career Compass Program.

A Guro-gu official said, “We hope that more young people will nurture their dreams in the health and medical field through direct and indirect experiences of the professional world,” and added, “We will continue to support expanding the scope of career exploration in related fields.”
