Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it has invited ‘Docent Jeong Woo-cheol’ as the first speaker of the 2024 Immortal Lectures.
The Immortal Lectures are cultural lectures delivered by experts in various fields such as humanities, health, science, economy, and popular culture, covering topics related to the happy lives of district residents.
The Immortal Lecture, held on April 30 at 7 p.m. in the main auditorium of the Nowon-gu Citizens’ Hall, will feature docent Jeong Woo-cheol with the theme ‘Vincent van Gogh ? The Painter of the Brightest Passion.’
‘Docent’ refers to a guide with a certain level of knowledge and originates from the Latin word ‘docere,’ meaning ‘to teach.’ In this lecture, docent Jeong Woo-cheol will share stories about Vincent van Gogh’s masterpieces and the hidden life stories of the painter within the artworks using his unique storytelling technique.
Docent Jeong Woo-cheol is one of Korea’s leading exhibition narrators, active in numerous domestic and international exhibitions such as the Picasso and 20th Century Masters Exhibition and Chagall Love and Live Exhibition. He provides a friendly approach to art through broadcasting programs like EBS Class e’s ‘Docent Jeong Woo-cheol’s Art Theater,’ tvN’s ‘You Quiz on the Block,’ and books including ‘The Painters I Loved’ and ‘Docent Jeong Woo-cheol’s Art Theater.’
This lecture will depart from the traditional art commentary focused mainly on artwork analysis and instead help the audience understand van Gogh’s works by blending the painter’s life into the art. The lecture is free of charge, and sign language interpreters will be provided for residents with language and hearing disabilities.
Residents wishing to participate can register online starting from the 8th on the district office website or register on-site from 6 p.m. on the day of the lecture. Online registration is limited to 500 people, and on-site registration is limited to the first 100 people. Seating is free seating without assigned seats.
The district has prepared lectures by distinguished figures from various fields again this year. The second Immortal Lecture, part of the four annual lectures, is scheduled for June 28 with the theme ‘Designing a Life of Aging Slowly,’ presented by Professor Jeong Hee-won from the Department of Geriatrics.
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “I hope this lecture will serve as an opportunity for residents to overcome the threshold of art that they found difficult and approach it more easily,” adding, “We will continue to invite distinguished figures from various fields desired by residents to provide meaningful times to encounter humanities in everyday life.”
