The 1919 'April 8 Manse Movement' Memorial Ceremony and Reenactment Event Held in Hampyeong

On the 8th, Hampyeong-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Lee Sang-ik) and the Haebomyeon Youth Association held a 4.8 Manse Movement memorial ceremony and reenactment event at the 3.1 Manse Tower Square and Munjang Market area in Haebomyeon Munjang-ri.


According to the county, the April 8 Independence Manse Movement was an incident on April 8, 1919, in which 24 local patriots led a Manse movement on market day together with students from Hampyeong Elementary School, which later became a catalyst for many Manse movements.

Before the event, on the 7th, the county held a memorial rite at Nakyeongjae in Wolya-myeon, the birthplace of the 4.8 Manse Movement, to reflect on the meaning of that day 105 years ago and honor the noble spirit of sacrifice.


On the 8th, about 1,000 people including Governor Lee Sang-ik, County Council Chairman Yoon Aeng-rang, bereaved families, residents, and students participated and marched from the Haebomyeon Office to the 3.1 Manse Tower.

Governor Lee Sang-ik of Hampyeong said, "I express infinite gratitude and respect for the noble sacrifice of the patriotic martyrs and national heroes who devoted themselves to the country," adding, "We will remember and uphold their lofty spirit and build a stronger Hampyeong."
