Gwangju Nam-gu Holds Memorial Event Ahead of Sewol Ferry 10th Anniversary

According to Nam-gu on the 8th, a series of events honoring the victims who became stars in the night sky will be held in the local community ahead of the 10th anniversary of the Sewol Ferry disaster.

First, Nam-gu has designated the period from the 12th to the 16th as the "10th Anniversary Memorial Period of the Sewol Ferry Disaster" and will operate a memorial space including an incense altar on the first floor of the district office.

The memorial space will display banners bearing the names of the 304 victims to preserve the memory of the Sewol Ferry, along with photos of memorial events held in the local community so far.

This is to fully remember the pain of the Sewol Ferry, which sank off the coast of Jindo on April 16, 2014, and to reflect on our society’s safety issues through the preservation of records of this national disaster.

The incense altar will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. to honor the victims, including the young students of Ansan Danwon High School who were in the prime of their youth.

District office officials will also collectively participate in the "Remember 20140416" memorial.

Starting at 3 p.m. on the 15th, Kim Byeong-nae, the district mayor, and staff will offer flowers in the first-floor lobby, holding the sorrow of the victims and their families in their hearts.

At this event, Mayor Kim Byeong-nae will deliver a memorial speech and read a commemorative poem, pledging to open a world that respects life as much as the depth of longing.

Additionally, local residents will hold the Sewol Ferry 10th Anniversary Memory Cultural Festival at the Blue Road Square behind Bigsupo in Juwol-dong from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the same day.

About 200 youths and residents from the area will attend, and through memorial performances, they will express condolences and comfort to the victims and their families.

A Nam-gu official said, "Remembering the Sewol Ferry is a firm step toward national safety and a pledge by all citizens to never repeat the tragedy," adding, "In the spring of April, we will once again recall the names of the victims and never forget the sorrow and memories of that day."
