On the 5th, Yuhan Foundation announced on the 8th that it held the 1st “2024 Yoo Il-han Scholarship” award ceremony at the 4th-floor auditorium of Yuhan Corporation in Dongjak-gu, Seoul. A total of KRW 355 million in scholarships was awarded to 71 recipients.
The newly established Yoo Il-han Scholarship this year expands the existing Yuhan Foundation scholarships, which were previously aimed at undergraduate students, to graduate students pursuing master's and doctoral degrees who are dedicated to their studies and research. The establishment of this scholarship was made based on the judgment that, considering the current situation where tuition support from private sectors or schools has increased, there is a need for scholarships to cover necessary expenses such as purchasing academic books and other costs required to continue studies. Additionally, unlike other scholarship programs, 40% of the beneficiaries are selected from multicultural families or international students, providing support to socially marginalized and overlooked groups, which aligns with the spirit of Yoo Il-han, the founder.
Kim Jung-soo, Chairman of the Yuhan Foundation, said, “The Yoo Il-han Scholarship is provided unconditionally and free of charge in accordance with the noble spirit of Dr. Yoo Il-han, the founder, who intended to return corporate profits to society.” He added, “We hope that in the future, this spirit of Dr. Yoo Il-han will contribute to the healthy development of our society through your voluntary participation and contributions.”
Since its establishment in 1970, the Yuhan Foundation has selected outstanding university students annually for 55 years up to this year, providing full tuition fees until graduation. The total number of scholarship recipients has reached about 8,000, with total support amounting to approximately KRW 26 billion. Through the establishment of the Yoo Il-han Scholarship, the Yuhan Foundation plans to further expand the scope of its socially committed activities.
