The government and the private sector have come together to establish a self-regulation system for the domestic metaverse ecosystem.

On the morning of the 5th, the Ministry of Science and ICT signed a self-regulation agreement with the Korea Metaverse Industry Association, the Korea Edutech Industry Association, and major business operators at Center Point Gwanghwamun.

Through the Virtual Convergence Industry Promotion Act, scheduled to be enforced in August, a legal basis for private-led self-regulation has been established. The industry agreed to cooperate in creating a metaverse ecosystem that protects users such as children and adolescents, upholds corporate management ethics, and fosters a fair trade structure.

The signing ceremony was attended by Shin Su-jeong, President of the Korea Metaverse Industry Association; Yang Maeng-seok, Head of Metaverse CO at SK Telecom; Kim Jae-kwon, Head of DX Business Division at KT; Lee Sang-yeop, CTO of LG Uplus; Kim Young-gi, CFO of Naver Z; Kim Won-il, CTO of Caliverse; Hwang Hee, CEO of Kakao Healthcare; and Won Man-ho, Executive Director of Woongjin ThinkBig, among others.

The metaverse self-regulation activities focus on △establishing and implementing self-regulation guidelines △education and promotion for business operators △inspection and improvement activities regarding user protection by operators △activities to enhance the level of user protection △and promotion of cooperative projects necessary for the advancement of the metaverse industry.

The Metaverse Industry Association has been operating a metaverse self-regulation research team and a working council to gather industry opinions on self-regulation promotion plans. The association plans to officially launch the "Metaverse Self-Regulation Committee" in the first half of this year to actively begin private-led metaverse self-regulation activities.

Hwang Gyu-cheol, Software Policy Officer at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, "The government will also actively support the establishment of a self-regulation system based on voluntary participation from the industry so that a safe and trustworthy metaverse ecosystem can be created throughout the industry."
