Han Dong-hoon, Emergency Response Committee Chairman of the People Power Party, stated on the 4th that the party's position is "completely opposed" to some Seoul city council members' efforts to repeal an ordinance that prohibits the use of the Rising Sun Flag and other Japanese imperial symbols in public places.
Nineteen city council members affiliated with the People Power Party proposed the repeal of the ordinance on the 3rd, arguing that "citizens already have a sufficient anti-imperialist awareness and feel discomfort toward the use of imperialist symbols, so regulating them as restricted public use items is excessive." However, they withdrew the proposal amid controversy.
Chairman Han emphasized, "This is completely contrary to the People Power Party's stance, which clearly states in its platform that it inherits the spirit of the March 1st Independence Movement," adding, "We absolutely cannot tolerate the use of Japanese imperialist symbols in public places, and we strongly oppose the repeal of the ordinance."
He further stated, "The party will conduct an investigation into the city council members who proposed the repeal and take strict measures accordingly."
