Selected for Ministry of Environment Public Project 'Nowon Environment Foundation' Entrusted Operation
Supporting Public-Private Carbon Neutrality Practices with Policy Experts to Strengthen Climate Crisis Response Capacity
Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it has officially started operating the 'Nowon-gu Carbon Neutral Support Center' to realize a carbon-neutral city by 2050.
After being selected for the Ministry of Environment's public project last year, the district designated the Nowon Environmental Foundation as the center's operating institution and hired carbon neutrality experts to begin operations in April.
The center is responsible for strengthening the district's carbon neutrality foundation and supporting public and private sector actions. Its main functions include policy support, citizen participation and resource linkage, and region-specific research.
As a policy support institution, the center assists in enhancing outcomes by evaluating and monitoring the implementation entities according to the district's major carbon neutrality plans. In the long term, it is also considering introducing a 'Greenhouse Gas Reduction Awareness Budget System' to pre-assess the impact of district policies on the climate crisis.
To effectively encourage citizen participation, the center plans to support and enhance the effectiveness of research and demonstrations that quantify citizens' carbon neutrality practice achievements.
Additionally, through carbon neutrality implementation strategy forums and public discussions involving experts from various fields and citizens, the center is expected to add momentum to the promotion of specialized projects by proposing policies.
According to the currently established 'Carbon Neutral Basic Plan,' the district is promoting carbon-neutral execution strategies in the building sector, such as carbon-neutral redevelopment, applying Zero Energy Building (ZEB) grade 4 or higher standards for new public buildings, and spreading renewable energy including mini solar power generation. In the transportation sector, it is also advancing the distribution of 7,000 electric vehicle chargers, supporting the purchase of electric two-wheelers, and creating a bicycle-friendly city, positioning the center to play a crucial role in achieving the 2050 carbon neutrality goal.
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, stated, “The role of local governments in responding to the climate crisis is significant, and there is much our district must do to lead as a carbon-neutral city. We will spare no support to ensure the center can fully perform its practical functions to accelerate the carbon-neutral era.”
