Hyosung TNC announced on the 3rd that it received an investment approval certificate for the 'Hyosung BDO Project' from the government of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, Vietnam, at the 'Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province Vision Declaration and Investment Approval Ceremony' held on the 30th of last month at Phu My 2 Industrial Complex in southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, Vietnam.
Hyosung TNC plans to invest a total of 1 trillion KRW to establish a bio butanediol (BDO) production plant with an annual capacity of 200,000 tons and proactively respond to the global materials market, which is being reorganized around eco-friendly products.
BDO is a chemical material used as a raw material for polytetramethylene glycol (PTMG), which is used to make spandex fibers. Recently, in addition to spandex fibers, it has been used in various industries such as automotive interior materials (TPU), biodegradable resins (PBAT), shoe soles, and industrial compounds. Bio BDO is manufactured by fermenting sugars derived from sugarcane or corn, completely replacing conventional fossil raw materials such as coal.
Hyosung TNC explained that with this investment, it has established the world's first integrated bio spandex production system by vertically integrating from raw materials to fibers. It plans to start production and sales of bio BDO with an annual capacity of 50,000 tons from the first half of 2026.
The integrated bio spandex production system improves production efficiency through stable raw material supply and enables rapid operation of the production system. Additionally, it secures cost competitiveness by reducing transportation costs while reducing environmental impact by cutting transportation fuel usage.
Hyosung TNC plans to expand collaboration with major global customers and chemical brand companies and lead the eco-friendly market by introducing various functional eco-friendly products using bio BDO.
Hyosung Chairman Cho Hyun-joon emphasized, "The bio business, which converts existing fossil raw materials into eco-friendly raw materials, will become a core pillar of Hyosung. We must strengthen our global eco-friendly market strategy based on bio BDO and the integrated bio spandex production system to enhance Hyosung's premium brand status."
