Tunnel Cleaning on All Sections of Line 1 at Dawn on April 6 to Prepare for Spring Yellow Dust and Ultrafine Dust
Construction Technology Headquarters and Cleaning Subsidiary Join Forces to Clean Tunnel Walls and Maintain Drainage
Aim to Reduce Ultrafine Dust by 36% Compared to Legal Standards by 2026 Based on 'Comprehensive Subway Ultrafine Dust Measures'
Seoul Metro (President Baek Ho) is making company-wide efforts to improve air quality by establishing a "Comprehensive Subway Fine Dust Countermeasure" to reduce fine dust concentrations by more than 30% compared to legal standards by 2026.
Meanwhile, the corporation announced that it will conduct water cleaning inside the Line 1 tunnel at dawn on the 6th to prepare for spring yellow dust and fine dust.
The cleaning section covers the entire Line 1 under the corporation’s jurisdiction, from Seoul Station to Cheongnyangni Station (10 stations).
The corporation will directly remove wall dust, which is difficult to eliminate with regular equipment, to improve air quality inside the tunnel by conducting cleaning at dawn. Along with deploying water spraying vehicles, the tunnel walls will be washed with water directly, and waste in the drainage channels will be collected. Seoul Metro Environment, a subsidiary of the corporation, will carry out water cleaning inside the stations.
The cleaning is scheduled to take place from 1:30 AM to 4:30 AM on the 6th. Since it involves track cleaning, it cannot be done during operating hours and will be conducted at dawn.
In addition, the corporation is making company-wide efforts to improve air quality by establishing a "Comprehensive Subway Fine Dust Countermeasure" to reduce fine dust concentrations by more than 30% compared to legal standards by 2026.
Old ventilation facilities inside the tunnels will be completely upgraded to increase air intake and exhaust capacity, and old gravel tracks will be sequentially replaced with concrete roadbeds that do not generate dust.
On platforms, the country’s first "forced exhaust facility" is being introduced, with work underway to replace aging air circulation equipment and introduce eco-friendly filters.
Kim Seong-ryeol, Head of Technology Headquarters (Senior Director) at Seoul Metro, said, "We have undertaken tunnel cleaning directly for citizens who may feel anxious due to spring yellow dust and fine dust," adding, "We are making company-wide efforts to improve air quality inside tunnels and stations, so we hope citizens will trust and use the Seoul subway."
