Korea Defense Industry Co., Ltd. (KDI) is promoting the development of a general industrial complex in the area of 306-6 Imhwa-ri, Yangchon-myeon, Nonsan-si, Chungnam. Meanwhile, the Yangchon Residents' Countermeasures Committee Against the Bomb Factory and the Citizens' Countermeasures Committee Opposing the Entry of Inhumane Weapons of Mass Destruction Manufacturers into Nonsan filed a complaint on the 2nd against Mayor Baek Seong-hyun of Nonsan for dereliction of duty.

In a press release issued that day, they emphasized, “KDI is promoting the development of a general industrial complex on a 254,824㎡ site at 306-6 Imhwa-ri, despite the environmental impact assessment consultation not being completed.”

They continued, “They are conducting construction work (14,778㎡) through a small-scale environmental impact assessment and individual permits,” and argued, “Carrying out construction before the environmental impact assessment procedures are completed violates Article 34, Paragraph 1 of the Environmental Impact Assessment Act, which prohibits pre-construction.”

They also stated, “In March, we requested Mayor Baek to order the suspension of KDI’s illegal construction, but he responded deceptively and insincerely, claiming that the procedures were being carried out lawfully,” and added, “We have filed a complaint with the Chungnam Provincial Police Agency against Mayor Baek for dereliction of duty.”

In response, Nonsan City stated, “In 2023, applications and approvals related to individual factories were received from the relevant company, and according to related regulations, a small-scale environmental impact assessment was properly concluded by the Geumgang River Basin Environmental Office of the Ministry of Environment.”

They added, “This year, an application for approval of the general industrial complex plan was received, and environmental impact assessment procedures are currently underway in accordance with legal regulations.”
