Busan Port Authority Conducts Safety Inspections at Construction Sites During Spring Thaw Period

Inspection of 24 Sites for Accident Preparedness Including Ground Weakening and Collapse

Busan Port Authority (BPA, President Kang Jun-seok) conducted safety inspections at 18 construction sites and 6 multi-use facilities in preparation for the spring thaw season.

On the 2nd, BPA announced that it focused on checking compliance with safety rules at construction sites and the risk status of facilities to prevent major accidents.

The authority explained that during the thaw period, the risk of accidents such as collapses or facility overturns due to ground weakening increases, making thorough inspections and management necessary.

BPA carried out focused safety inspections reflecting the characteristics of each major site over two weeks from the 19th of last month to the 1st, in a joint effort by five internal departments.

At the 'Gamcheon Port General Wharf Expansion Project,' they inspected the curing and formwork conditions of on-site cast concrete, electrical facilities such as lighting towers and CCTV for condensation issues, as well as the safety management status of maritime workers.

For the slope reinforcement work on the Cheonga Ilju Road at Busan New Port, safety measures such as regular site inspections and access control to the worksite were emphasized to prevent accidents caused by landslides or slope collapses.

At the multi-use facility, the Coastal Passenger Terminal, they focused on checking defects such as aging and cracks in the facility to ensure safety.

Through this inspection, BPA plans to immediately address issues that can be corrected on-site and establish countermeasures for major defects, including budget allocation.

Lee Sang-kwon, Head of BPA’s Construction Headquarters, said, “As construction work that was halted during winter resumes and the frozen ground thaws, there is a risk of cracks and collapses, so it is important to conduct safety inspections in advance. We will strive to promptly improve even minor issues to prevent accidents.”
