Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake in Iwate Prefecture, Japan... No Tsunami Warning

At 4:24 a.m. on the 2nd, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 occurred in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, according to NHK and other sources.


The epicenter was off the northern coast of Iwate Prefecture, with a depth of 80 km. The Japan Meteorological Agency stated that there is no tsunami risk from this earthquake.

Shaking of up to seismic intensity 5 lower was detected in Iwate Prefecture and Aomori Prefecture. Intensity 5 lower means most people feel fear, and dishes on shelves or books may fall.


The Japanese government issued an emergency earthquake alert through the nationwide J-ALERT system.


No immediate damage has been reported. According to Tohoku Electric Power, the Higashidori Nuclear Power Plant in Higashidorimura, Aomori Prefecture, showed no abnormalities. Nuclear-related facilities, including the spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in Rokkashomura, Aomori Prefecture, were also confirmed to have no issues by the operator, Japan Nuclear Fuel Limited.
