On the 1st, Park Seong-jae, Minister of Justice, met with Kim Jeong-wook, President of the Seoul Bar Association, to discuss various issues including the attorney system.
The Ministry of Justice announced that Minister Park held a meeting from 2 p.m. at the Government Gwacheon Complex with Kim Jeong-wook, President of the Seoul Bar Association, and its executives to discuss current issues related to the attorney system.
At the meeting, the Ministry of Justice was represented by Legal Affairs Director Gu Sang-yeop, Spokesperson Shin Dong-won, and Legal Affairs Manager Park Yang-ho, while the Seoul Bar Association was represented by Senior Vice President Lee Jae-heon, Vice President Kim Seung-hyun, and Secretary General Park Byung-cheol.
The discussion lasted about an hour and covered various topics in the legal profession, including attorney advertising platforms and the recently highlighted issue of artificial intelligence (AI) legal services.
The Seoul Bar Association reportedly raised concerns with Minister Park regarding difficulties in attorney visits at prisons and detention centers, as well as issues related to correspondence between inmates and their families or acquaintances.
Regarding attorney visits, the system has changed to online applications, and if the application is not submitted by 4 p.m. the previous day, same-day visit requests are not accepted. Additionally, due to a shortage of attorney visiting rooms, even applications submitted the day before sometimes fail to secure visits.
Furthermore, for correspondence exchanged between inmates in detention centers or prisons and their families, the management responsibility has shifted from the Ministry of Justice to the post office, resulting in delivery times increasing by one or two days compared to before. The emergence of multiple intermediary companies has also increased the cost burden.
Meanwhile, Minister Park is reported to have proposed jointly improving the issue of "prompt case processing," which he recently emphasized at a nationwide meeting of high prosecutors and district prosecutors.
