Last Day of Honorary Chairman Cho's Funeral
Business Leaders Continue to Pay Respects

On the third day since the passing of the late Cho Seok-rae, Honorary Chairman of the Hyosung Group, memorial services began in the morning at the funeral hall of Severance Hospital in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, where business leaders continued to pay their respects.


Lee Jae-hyun, Chairman of CJ Group, visited the funeral hall at around 10:51 a.m. He said, "It is truly regrettable to see off such an outstanding business leader who contributed greatly to the national economy," and added, "I pray for the deceased's peaceful rest."

Following him, Lee Woong-yeol, Honorary Chairman of Kolon Group, who came to the funeral hall, recalled the deceased as "a remarkable person, a star in the textile industry."


Choi Tae-won, Chairman of SK Group, visited the funeral hall at around 11:51 a.m. and stayed for about 20 minutes. After paying his respects and leaving the hall, Chairman Choi mourned, saying, "The deceased was a pioneer in Korea's technology management and was also very skilled in private diplomacy."


On the previous day, through the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry website, Chairman Choi expressed, "Our economic community is overwhelmed with grief at the sudden and sorrowful news," and added, "Losing such an excellent leader at a critical time when the economy must leap forward again is not only a great loss to the business community but also to our society."

Jung Yong-jin, Chairman of Shinsegae Group, who visited the funeral hall in the morning, stayed for about 30 minutes to console the bereaved family. He left the hall after embracing Cho Hyun-sang, Vice Chairman of Hyosung Group and the chief mourner. He did not respond to reporters' questions about his relationship with the deceased. Kim Dong-kwan, Vice Chairman of Hanwha, also visited the funeral hall around the same time and stayed for about 20 minutes.

Around noon, Ahn Duk-geun, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, who visited the funeral hall, said, "As the Minister of Industry, I came to pay my respects because he was the founder who foresaw our country's industry early on, and there are many mixed feelings as generations change."


Earlier that morning, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Park Chan-gu, Chairman of Kumho Petrochemical, Park Jun-kyung, President of Kumho Petrochemical, Lee Jae-hyun, Chairman of CJ Group, Choi Tae-won, Chairman of SK Group, Lee Woo-hyun, Chairman of OCI, Jung Yong-jin, Chairman of Shinsegae, Kim Dong-kwan, Vice Chairman of SK, Lee Woo-hyun, Chairman of OCI, and Ahn Duk-geun, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, visited the funeral hall to pay their respects.


Honorary Chairman Cho, who led the group for 35 years since 1982, passed away on the 29th of last month at 6:38 p.m. at the age of 89. The funeral will be held over five days, with the final rites on the 2nd of next month. Former Prime Minister Lee Hong-gu is serving as the honorary funeral chairman, and Lee Sang-woon, Vice Chairman of Hyosung, is the funeral chairman overseeing the proceedings.
