Gyeonggi-do Invests 12.7 Billion KRW in 'Entry Blockage Facilities' at 1,174 Rivers to Prepare for Heavy Rain

Gyeonggi Province will install entry blocking facilities using the latest information and communication technology (ICT) at entrances to riverside walking trails, bicycle paths, and low-water roads to prepare for heavy summer rains.

On the 31st, Gyeonggi Province announced that it will invest a total of 12.7 billion KRW this year to install entry blocking facilities at 1,174 river access points that currently lack such facilities.

The river walking trail entry blocking facilities are designed to prevent casualties by automatically notifying the provincial and municipal disaster safety control rooms or facility managers of danger information through various sensors such as water level gauges when warning signs including river flooding occur. The situation on site is monitored via disaster CCTV, and the entry blocking facilities are operated remotely, automatically, or manually.

Until now, when weather warnings were issued in advance, disaster safety lines made of vinyl tape were installed on river walking trails to block access. The problem was that river facility users damaged the tape or failed to recognize the disaster situation and crossed the safety lines to enter the trails, making effective access blocking difficult.

Gyeonggi Province recognized that the existing response method had limitations in protecting the lives and property of residents, and decided to support the installation of blocking facilities at riverside entrances, including river facilities, where there is a risk of flooding accidents.

Oh Byeong-kwon, the First Deputy Governor of Gyeonggi Province, said, "Installing entry blockers to prepare for natural disasters such as heavy rain can prevent casualties," adding, "We will actively promote improvement projects for vulnerable facilities at risk of human damage from disasters and make greater efforts to create a safe Gyeonggi Province."
