Haman-gun, Gyeongnam Province announced on the 28th that it will invest 2.6 billion KRW this year to improve livestock odor, which recurs annually, in order to create a pleasant living environment.

In particular, the odor improvement efforts will focus on the Haman-myeon area, which was designated as an odor management zone by Gyeongnam Province last year due to frequent odor complaints caused by densely concentrated livestock farms.

Since May 8th of last year, the county has continuously managed part of Haman-myeon as an odor management area designated by Gyeongnam Province. After the designation, the County Agricultural Technology Center, in collaboration with the Korea Pork Producers Association, conducted odor reduction consulting for five months from July to November last year, and prepared implementation plans for odor improvement for each farm, which were reflected in this year’s budget.

To secure national funding, the county was selected for the odor improvement public contest project conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs last year, securing 1 billion KRW in project funds. With a total budget of 2.6 billion KRW, the project is being carried out with the goal of completion by the end of April, investing 2.6 billion KRW in 23 sites across six sectors for facility improvements such as bio-curtains, purification discharge facilities, and odor reduction deodorization systems.

Additionally, the Agricultural Technology Center plans to expand the supply of microbial agents such as Bacillus subtilis, which it cultivates in-house and provides free of charge, as well as spraying agents with high odor reduction effects used by farms, aiming to reduce odor emissions by more than 70% from the current level.

According to the county, reducing livestock odor requires not only the efforts of local governments but also the efforts and practices of farm owners above all else. Therefore, management will be conducted through continuous education emphasizing the importance of farm owners’ practices, such as maintaining cleanliness of livestock barns and performing daily disinfection and cleaning.

County Governor Jo Geun-je said, “In 2024, we expect that the odor improvement projects promoted by Haman-gun so far will achieve visible results,” and added, “We will continue to strive to create a pleasant living environment where residents can feel the odor improvement through the active participation of livestock farms, and where livestock farming and local residents coexist harmoniously.”
