KT Regular General Meeting on the 28th... CEO-Shareholder Q&A
Kim Young-seop "Never Hired Due to Prosecutor Background"
On Deficit Overseas Business Question: "Withdrawal Procedures"
Youngseop Kim, CEO of KT, firmly stated that there is 'no way' a large-scale restructuring will occur after the general election.
At the KT regular shareholders' meeting held on the 28th at the KT Research and Development Center in Seocho-gu, Seoul, CEO Kim responded to shareholders' and employees' concerns that "every time a parachute CEO comes, there is a large-scale restructuring, so employees are anxious that a large-scale restructuring might happen after the general election," by saying, "I clearly state that there will be no artificial large-scale restructuring." He added, "This was an issue I drew a clear line on during the special shareholders' meeting last September when I was appointed, and also in round meetings in front of about 60,000 employees."
In response to a shareholder's remark that "there are rumors of parachute appointments from the prosecution and political circles," CEO Kim answered, "I have never heard such rumors about political or prosecution figures coming down after the general election." He further explained, "We have never hired anyone simply because they were from the prosecution or political circles; we have brought in people considering their expertise and experience to solve KT's problems," adding, "I believe they can play a significant role in KT's development." Regarding criticism about poor internal communication, he said, "I will take it into consideration and actively work to improve it."
Regarding whether he received an audit report on the overseas business in Rwanda, Africa, invested in by the previous CEO, which is reportedly running a deficit of several hundred billion won, CEO Kim stated, "That business is currently undergoing withdrawal procedures." He added, "It is not the case that large-scale losses are continuously occurring now," and "The accumulated losses so far have already been reflected in the existing profit and loss and are being settled."
In response to a shareholder's criticism that "hundreds of billions of won are spent annually on the salaries of full-time advisory executives who are not registered directors," he said, "The advisory executive system continues because its effectiveness and usability have been verified," but also acknowledged, "However, it is true that offices were provided and operated even though they did not actually come to work." He then stated, "From this year, all such matters have been organized and abolished," adding, "This is a process of correcting abnormal and irrational practices to normal ones."
