A man in his 20s was fined for selling unauthorized programs (hacking tools) for a popular online FPS (first-person shooter) game for money.
On the 27th, Ji Hye-seon, presiding judge of the Criminal Division 5 at Gwangju District Court, announced that A (27), who was indicted for violating the Game Industry Promotion Act, was sentenced to a fine of 9 million won.
A was charged with selling hacking tools for the online game 'Battlegrounds' 212 times at 18,000 won per person from August to October 2018, earning about 4.2 million won.
The program sold by A manipulated client data to allow the user to see opponents through walls that would normally be hidden, giving an unfair advantage over other players.
It was also investigated that A established and operated a sales website for the purpose of selling the program.
The court stated, "The defendant seriously disrupted the normal use of the online game, causing significant obstacles to the game company's development and management tasks, and inflicted damage on other participants in the game, making the offense grave," and added, "Considering that the defendant committed the crime deliberately and the high number of offenses, the sentence is determined accordingly."
