In the face of the increasingly serious low birthrate situation, Gangneung City in Gangwon Province has decided to implement a service that stamps a self-made commemorative seal for families who register births.

On the 27th, Gangneung City announced that it will start a free issuance service of birth commemorative certificates stamped with a self-made commemorative seal. This is to convey congratulations on the birth of a baby and to foster a birth-friendly social atmosphere.
The eligible recipients are families who have completed birth registration at the town and township offices or neighborhood community centers in Gangneung City, and they can receive the first resident registration certificate of their baby's life free of charge once immediately after completing the birth registration. Through this, the baby's name, Hanja characters, date of birth, and other resident registration details can be accurately confirmed, and the special birth congratulatory commemorative seal unique to Gangneung City can be stamped to share the joy of birth.
Gangneung City recently announced that it produced a birth congratulatory commemorative seal engraved with the phrase "Congratulations on the birth of your baby" and distributed it to the town and neighborhood offices, and the service will be implemented from the end of this month. Kim Jeongpil, head of the Civil Affairs Division, said, "The issuance of birth commemorative certificates is a service provided so that the local community can celebrate and commemorate the birth of a baby together," adding, "We will continue to discover customized civil services that respond to the low birthrate and aging society and satisfy citizens."
Meanwhile, according to the 'January 2024 Population Trends' announced by Statistics Korea on the 27th, the number of births in January this year was 21,442, a decrease of 1,788 (-7.7%) compared to January 2023 (23,230). This is the lowest monthly figure since monthly statistics began in 1981.
