Continuous Maintenance of Illegal Advertisements on Major Arterial Roads... Focused Removal of Banner Residues and Strings
Gangbuk-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Soon-hee) is conducting a signboard improvement project to create a pleasant and safe street environment, focusing on the maintenance of ownerless signboards and illegal fixed advertisements.
First, the signboard improvement project aims to organize the streetscape by replacing disorderly and old signboards with ones that reflect the local characteristics. This project is carried out in a resident-led manner, encouraging residents to participate actively.
The project area covers the streets from Deokneung-ro 28-gil to Solmae-ro 50-gil, where Sungshin Women’s University Mia Unjeong Green Campus, Seoul Cyber University, Shinil Middle and High Schools, and Seoul Hwaggye Elementary School are located. The section with the greatest potential for signboard improvement was selected through a public contest.
Additionally, the district plans to implement the ‘Mia, the Premier Street You Want to Find Project’ in this area to maximize the effect of urban aesthetics improvement.
Starting from April, a ‘Signboard Improvement Residents’ Committee’ will be formed within the project area, consisting of building owners, store owners, and business association members, allowing residents to decide on signboard designs, autonomous maintenance items, and management methods. Up to 2.5 million KRW will be provided to businesses for signboard replacement costs.
The district also offers free maintenance for illegal fixed advertisements and ownerless signboards to prevent accidents caused by natural disasters. The maintenance targets include illegal signboards exceeding legal size and quantity limits, as well as signboards without owners due to business closure or relocation.
Those wishing to request maintenance can apply to the Gangbuk-gu Construction Management Division if they are building owners where illegal fixed advertisements or ownerless signboards are located, or if they are residents currently operating or preparing to operate a business in the building.
Furthermore, to improve urban aesthetics, the district continuously removes illegal advertisements such as banners and posters. From this month until June, the district plans to focus on removing residual materials left after illegal advertisements are taken down at major arterial road intersections such as Samyang-ro, Hancheon-ro, Dobong-ro, as well as Gangbuk-gu Office Intersection and Gwangsan Intersection.
Lee Soon-hee, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, stated, “Gangbuk-gu is committed to creating a dignified urban environment where residents can walk safely and comfortably. We will continue to provide advertising spaces such as designated bulletin boards for residents and actively remove illegal advertisements to improve the cityscape.”
