"Frequent Lies and Same-Day Absences, Eventually Fired"… MZ Boss Left Speechless by MZ Part-Timer Illustration by Kim Dahee

"I’m also part of the MZ generation (Millennials + Generation Z), so I didn’t really know, but now I understand. I’m accepting it as the fate of being a boss."

On the 26th, a story from a 20-something business owner struggling with part-time workers was shared in the self-employed community 'Apeunikka Sajangida' (Because It Hurts, I’m the Boss). The author, Mr. A, revealed in a post titled "What do you think about such absurd part-timers?" that he recently fired a part-time worker who frequently lied about being sick and called in absent on the same day.

Mr. A said, "Because I’m young, I once had a big fight after hiring an older woman. After that, I hired so-called MZ friends who are younger than me," adding, "There might be some who aren’t like this, but many quit after not understanding even when I tried to explain things nicely about what’s unacceptable, often talking back rudely." He also said, "Calling in sick with lies and being absent on the same day has become a normal level now."

Mr. A added, "If they were friends who could communicate from the start, they wouldn’t behave outside common sense. Of course, I know it’s not easy to let them go, and it’s tough to teach them again, so I’m worried, but I’m filtering them out thinking ‘that’s the fate of being a boss.’"

Other self-employed people who read the story sympathized with Mr. A. Self-employed person B wrote, "Seeing that I don’t understand MZ generation part-timers, I briefly thought ‘Am I an old fogey?’ Hearing the story of the 20-something boss makes me feel relieved." Then B shared their own story. One part-timer asked other employees to cover shifts and went on a 4-5 day overseas trip, and two weeks later asked for a cover again and went on a week-long overseas trip.

B expressed frustration, saying, "What’s worse, during the second overseas trip, the part-timer didn’t even tell the boss directly, and the person who was supposed to cover didn’t show up."

Other self-employed people shared various part-timer stories such as "There’s a part-timer who says ‘I can multitask’ and claims to study without affecting work, but just spreads books on the desk and studies," "They frequently take selfies," and "They only surf the web on their smartphones."

In response to their complaints, advice was given such as "You have to boldly let them go," "It’s right to tolerate only three times and then tell them to quit without further discussion," and "When drafting contracts, you should specifically state work-related matters like excluding weekly holiday pay if they miss work due to personal reasons."
