Gyeonggi Province will demolish the slate roofs of 2,301 houses, warehouses, and livestock barns this year to remove asbestos, an environmental hazardous substance that causes respiratory diseases.
On the 26th, Gyeonggi Province announced that it will invest a total of 9.7 billion KRW in local government funds, including national and provincial subsidies, providing up to 3.52 million KRW per house for demolition costs, up to 3 million KRW for roof improvement costs, and up to 5.4 million KRW for livestock barns and warehouses.
Priority support will be given to small-scale areas of 200㎡ or less per building, with vulnerable groups receiving full coverage of demolition costs and roof improvement costs up to a limit of 10 million KRW.
Building owners or tenants with the owner's consent can apply for the slate demolition support project at the environmental department of the city/county/district or the town/village office. After selection, a construction company designated by the city/county will visit to carry out the demolition and roof improvement work.
Additionally, from April to November, a "Slate Building Status Survey" will be conducted to utilize the data for slate disposal support measures.
Since 2011, Gyeonggi Province has supported a total of 59.6 billion KRW in local government funds, including national and provincial subsidies, for slate demolition support projects over 14 years, demolishing 21,496 buildings and supporting roof improvements for 813 buildings with 3.4 billion KRW.
Park Dae-geun, head of the Environmental Health and Safety Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "We will continuously promote the demolition of asbestos slate buildings and roof improvement projects to protect the health of residents and create a pleasant environment."
