One quarter of the nurse's hourly wage
NVIDIA has teamed up with healthcare company Hippocrates AI to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) medical robot. It is expected to demonstrate capabilities surpassing human nurses at a low cost of around $9 per hour.
According to Fox Business on the 21st (local time), the two companies announced their collaboration to create an "empathetic healthcare medical robot" powered by NVIDIA and trained with Hippocrates AI's large language model (LLM).
The robot is reported to communicate with humans using an "ultra-low latency conversational response" method. It has undergone testing with over 1,000 nurses and 100 doctors in the United States, and dozens of healthcare providers are currently evaluating it.
According to materials submitted by the company, the robot outperforms competitor products such as OpenAI's GPT-4 and LLaMA 270B chat, as well as human nurses, in all test categories. Notably, it surpassed human nurses in identifying drug effects with a 79% success rate compared to 63%, and in distinguishing over-the-counter drugs not permitted under certain conditions with 88% versus 45%. It also led in comparing drug values and reference ranges at 96% to 93%, and in detecting toxic doses of over-the-counter drugs at 81% to 57%.
The two companies foresee that this medical robot will help alleviate the shortage of medical personnel in the United States. Moonjal Sha, co-founder and CEO of Hippocrates AI, stated in a press release, "We aim to continue improving the technology and enhancing accessibility and equity through our collaboration with NVIDIA to mitigate workforce shortages."
Meanwhile, the operating cost of the robot is reported to be $9 per hour, about one-quarter the cost of a human nurse. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average hourly wage for nurses in the United States in 2022 was $39.05.
On the same day, NVIDIA's stock closed at $914.35 on the New York Stock Exchange, up 1.18% from the previous session.
