As the weather has recently warmed up and yellow dust has become rampant, Gangdong-gu (District Mayor Lee Soo-hee) has designated a three-week period starting from March 11 as the "Gangdong-gu Spring Cleaning Week" and has begun urban environment maintenance.

This is to clean up the fine dust and accumulated grime that piled up over the winter from main roads to alleyways and to create a clean and pleasant living environment.

During this period, a total of five water cleaning vehicles, six dust suction vehicles, and five road surface cleaning vehicles will be mobilized to thoroughly clean the calcium chloride accumulated on the roads. Cheonho-daero and Olympic-ro have been designated as intensive management roads and will be cleaned more than four times a day, focusing efforts on reducing fine dust in spring. Environmental officers will be deployed to 65 sections, including roadside areas on arterial and secondary roads and special work zones in outer areas, to conduct thorough cleaning. The snow-melting agent barriers installed on roadside green belts during winter will also be removed along with old fallen leaves. Tree washing will be carried out in areas where calcium chloride damage is a concern.

Additionally, the district designated March 21 as "Spring Cleaning Day," during which Gangdong-gu Office and each community center conducted large-scale environmental maintenance activities.

On this day, Mayor Lee Soo-hee personally rolled up her sleeves and joined employees of the Cheonho 3-dong Community Center, residents, and environmental officers to clean various locations, drawing attention. (Photo)

The main maintenance activities included ▲ cleaning vulnerable areas prone to illegal dumping on side streets and alleys ▲ focused collection of cigarette butts ▲ maintenance of rainwater drains ▲ cleaning around multi-use facilities and bus stops ▲ maintenance around elementary, middle, and high school commuting routes ▲ removal of illegal sticker advertisements on public facilities ▲ and cleaning around construction sites. From Cheonho Rodeo Street, selected as a pilot area by the district, to the section near Gangdong Seongsim Hospital, eco-friendly road surface cleaners were used to maintain side streets, sidewalks, and back alleys where large cleaning vehicles have difficulty accessing.

Mayor Lee Soo-hee of Gangdong-gu said, "As the weather warms and outdoor activities increase, I hope visitors and residents of Gangdong-gu will welcome the new spring in a cleaner environment," adding, "We will pay even closer attention to environmental maintenance to build a clean city image."

Furthermore, the district has independently selected intensive cleaning sections for each of the 18 neighborhoods to clean vulnerable areas and focus on maintaining shopping districts with high foot traffic, traditional markets, areas around subway stations and bus stops, and school commuting routes.

Also, from April to November, the fourth Thursday of each month has been designated as "Clean Day" to conduct focused environmental maintenance in vulnerable areas by neighborhood. Residents will be encouraged to participate voluntarily, and continuous promotion of proper waste separation and disposal times will be carried out.
